When the OC Weekly says you are screwed, then you better damn well believe you are screwed, and probably 7 ways from Sunday, to boot! :-)
How I find myself in this sorry position is a long story, so get comfortable....
The chain of events was kicked off by an article by Gustavo Arellano called "Because Mexicans Never Return to Mexico"[Jan. 23].
This sparked a letter to the editor, printed in the Feb. 6th issue, by Donna Locke of Tennesseans for Immigration Reform:
MEXIGO
I read Gustavo Arellanos article "Because Mexicans Never Return to Mexico" [Jan. 23], which was posted on American Patrols website. The piece made me wonder yet again why Mexicans will not fight for their country as we Americans fight for ours. I was born in hardscrabble Tennessee, where poverty was and is a way of life for so many of its nativesbut we are known as the Volunteer State because our men (and women) have volunteered in such great numbers for every war, every fight for our country.
The Editor of the Weekly responded in the following way:
Donna, you touch on a sensitive issue, so lets be clear with our facts: people from Tennessee do not volunteer for the armed forces to fight for Tennessee; they volunteer to leave Tennessee because even the possibility of dying in some far-off desert nation is preferable to living in Tennessee with dopes like you who use grotesquely quaint terms like "hardscrabble." Anyway, good luck with your big push for immigration reform. I imagine you have your hands full with all those fucking Kentuckians sneaking over the borders.
Well now, being of Kentucky stock, I took umbrage at that last sentence as you can well imagine, and immediately fired off a letter of my own.
Here in its entirety is not only the letter, published today in the Feb. 20th issue, but the EDITORIAL INTRODUCTION that it was felt neccessary to include so as to enlighten any Weekly readers who had the temerity to have actually skipped reading an issue of this fine Metropolitan News Weekly.
Editors Note: The following letter is in response to our Feb. 6 Letters page in which we responded to a missive from Donna Locke of "Tennesseans for Immigration Reform" with: "Anyway, good luck with your big push for immigration reform. I imagine you have your hands full with all those fucking Kentuckians sneaking over the borders."
My mother was a fucking Kentuckian, my grandmother was a fucking Kentuckian, and her parents and grandparents were fucking Kentuckians. We folks with roots in Kentucky take our fucking seriously, and to insinuate that any of us would even CONSIDER immigrating to the backwater of Tennessee is fightin words! My mother immigrated to California, and married an immigrant from Macedonia and her brothers immigrated first to California, and then, in one case, to Colorado, before settling in Arizona. I am quite proud of my fucking ancestors, though the ones from Indiana are proving, through research, to have been a major pain in the ass.
So there it is.
It's officially declared by no less an authority on screwing ( just check out the ads that help pay their bills, in the back of the magazine each week if you want further proof of their expertise ) than the OC Weekly.
I'm Screwed. :-)
All politics aside.... God, I love that Magazine! :-)
